A town's youngest ever mayor has said it was an "honour and a privilege" to take on the role at the age of just 26.

Connor Mulhall was confirmed as mayor of Wetherby on Wednesday after he had previously acted as deputy mayor and had served on the budget, planning and communications committees.

A spokesperson for Wetherby Town Council said the "milestone" appointment reflected the West Yorkshire market town's "ongoing commitment to inclusivity and forward-thinking leadership".

Mulhall said: "I am proud to call Wetherby my home, and I look forward to meeting with community groups and residents over the next year."

The council spokesperson said Mulhall's youth would bring "fresh energy" to the role and commended him on his "clear passion" for civic duty.

Mulhall took over the official chains of office from councillor Dawn Payne.

Joining Wetherby's new mayor as his deputy will be councillor Stuart Newcombe.

In 2016, a 19-year-old Labour councillor in Goole, East Yorkshire, became the youngest mayor in the UK.

Meanwhile, former Somali refugee Magid Magid became Sheffield's youngest ever lord mayor in 2018 at the age of 29.

The activist and politician was known for his flamboyant clothing and outspoken nature, but stood down from the role in 2019.
